Description of Garden and Interior Design
This course can be taken with no prior experience. It has been written for beginners in the art of garden design and for students with modest knowledge of the subject. Although it provides some horticultural information, its focus is firmly on design. You will be doing hands-on practical projects and you will be encouraged to visit and research other gardens. By the end of the course you will have developed design ideas and produced a detailed garden design and planting plan. You will understand how to use hard and soft materials, how to exploit differences in site level and how time and seasonal changes operate in a garden. You will also be able to see your own work in the context of historical and contemporary garden design.
More InformationThis course introduces you to the language, elements and principles of design in relation to interiors. Through a range of hands-on projects you will consider the importance of human scale, learn how to use lighting, colour, pattern and texture and acquire basic experience in drawing, model-making and creating sample boards. You will also develop a working knowledge of the history of interior design and of contemporary design. The course gives you numerous opportunities to develop your own personal style and to use your own home in design projects. Anyone with an interest in interior design is welcome to enrol. You do not need drawing skills as you will be shown ways of creating the drawings needed to support your designs.
More InformationThis course builds on Garden Design 1: The Art of Design and exposes you to more demanding challenges giving you deeper insight into the practical aspects of garden design. You will be carrying out four major projects, each one underpinned by research allowing you to use initiative and make individual choices. The first project emphasises creativity while working on a site with difficult changes of level and a demanding brief. In the final project you will be designing a garden of your own choice and showing, through working drawings and management and maintenance plans, how the design is to be achieved. We advise taking Garden Design 1 before enrolling on this course but direct entry is possible for more experienced designers.
