Textures

Posted by Paul Vincent at March 05. 2008

The brief:
To capture, in any visual medium, an image which speaks to you of texture. The original could be two or three dimensional so this is a competition which all OCA visual arts students can enter.

The winning image will be used for OCA's early summer mailing, so if you are using a non-digital medium, please ensure that the digital photograph or scan is of a high quality. Since the mailing is an A5 postcard, you should bear these dimensions in mind when selecting an image to submit, the image can be in portrait or landscape orientation.

Open to current OCA students only, all entrants retain rights to their work but grant us a license to use on the OCA website and in promotional materials. To enter this competition, go to your MyOCA area, and go to upload an image through your gallery. Select your chosen image and in the 'Medium' area, select 'Texture competition' before uploading your work. Your work will then be viewable, along with all other entrants' work through the 'Textures Competition' area of the gallery (select 'View by Medium' in the gallery).

The competition will be judged by OCA Chief Executive, Gareth Dent.

Prize £50 Amazon voucher plus 100 A5 postcards of your image

Closes 25 April '08
The winner will be announced within this forum post on Monday 28 April.

Hi, presumably one image per student?

Same question was asked on the "Seasons" competition and the answer was there were no limits to either number of images submitted or size of photos.

Judging the Textures competition proved to to be particularly difficult, with over 150 entries across a wide range of media and all at an impressive standard.

In the end, Crashing Waves by Penny Lomatschinsky stood out because of the free use of paint to create texture and tension

Penny will receive the Amazon voucher and 100 A5 postcards of her work.

Meanwhile the standard of photography continues to impress and so I have chosen two completely different images as highly commended.

Howard Nowlan's Connection is a subtle study in skin and woollen surfaces

while Elicia Rogers' Still Sleeping took a second look to appreciate the contrast between the distinctly strange texture of the nose and claws

Both highly commended artists will get ten standard postcards of their work.
