Reflection

Posted by Paul Vincent at April 25. 2008
The brief:

To capture, in any visual medium, an image which speaks to you of 'Reflection'. The original could be two or three dimensional so this is a competition which all OCA visual arts students can enter.

The winning image will be used for OCA's early-mid Summer mailing, so if you are using a non-digital medium, please ensure that the digital photograph or scan is of a high quality. Since the mailing is an A5 postcard, you should bear these dimensions in mind when selecting an image to submit, the image can be in portrait or landscape orientation.

Open to current OCA students only, all entrants retain rights to their work but grant us a license to use on the OCA website and in promotional materials. To enter this competition, go to your MyOCA area, and go to upload an image through your gallery. Select your chosen image and in the 'Medium' area, select 'Reflection competition' before uploading your work. Your work will then be viewable, along with all other entrants' work through the 'Reflection Competition' area of the gallery (select 'View by Medium' in the gallery).

The competition will be judged by OCA Chief Executive, Gareth Dent.

Prize £50 Amazon voucher plus 100 A5 postcards of your image

Closes 23 May '08
The winner will be announced within this forum post on Monday 26 May.

Actually I hadn't realised the 26th was a bank holiday in the UK, so the winner will be announced on the 27th May

And the winners are:

Winner

‘Do you remember when?’  by KathyH (http://www.oca-uk.com/Members/KathyH/5-A6061.jpg/view?galleryType=getMedium&galleryTitle=Reflection%20Competition&b_start=0 )

This theme invites the artist to explore an idea, as the word itself can be used in different ways.

In this image, a wider interpretation of ‘reflection’ has been appreciated and expressed. The viewer is drawn to a reflection in the water which includes figures who are both reflected and reflecting.

Commended

‘Autumn reflections’  by angelpeak ( http://www.oca-uk.com/Members/angelpeak/leaves_sm.jpg/view?galleryType=getMedium&galleryTitle=Reflection%20Competition&b_start=0 )

The beauty of a single leaf has been captured here - at first glance a mirror image but ‘on reflection’, one which reveals the underside folding away from the viewer.

‘Double self portrait’ by phil  ( http://www.oca-uk.com/Members/Phil/Double-Self-Portrait.JPG/view?galleryType=getMedium&galleryTitle=Reflection%20Competition&b_start=0 )

This painting challenges both artist and viewer. It has a surreal quality; this may or may not be an intention of the artist, but nevertheless, it poses questions and suggests that he is on a journey, using the medium of paint.

General comments

The number and the quality of the entries has been very encouraging and very good. A number of the photographic images are striking and well observed. They vary from the documentary, through some wonderful reflections in windows, sea and beach themes, to reflections in water which have become so abstracted as to have taken on painterly qualities which could have inspired an Impressionist!

Painters are presented with different challenges and in ‘Cornish Sunset’, the artist explores mark making and colour in response to the challenge which these and the subject present.
