I originally trained as a teacher (Certificate in Education), but after college worked in educational administration, first at the London School of Economics, then at the University of Oxford. My first love had been dressmaking, but this was not approved of as a career choice, as was anything to do with art. During these years I continued in my spare time to make clothing, as well as quilts, and also sold products to local craft shops. After completing an Open University degree (BA History of Art), I worked for many years at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. Successful completion of the OCA Textile courses led to my being accepted onto the combined Pg.Cert/Pg. Dip/MA Textiles course at Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, UCE Birmingham. I obtained the Postgraduate Certificate in Textiles, Fashion and Surface Design in September 2003, the Postgraduate Diploma in Textiles two terms later and finally an MA in Textiles at the end of 2004.
I have been an OCA Textiles tutor since late 2003, and take great pleasure in guiding students along their own creative paths. I believe that we are all capable of much more than we think. I continue my own work as a textile artist and am also engaged as a freelance textile consultant/designer-maker for a commercial company, which involves specialist textiles.
