I’m primarily a novelist and short story writer, but I’m also becoming more interested in radio drama and have just completed the first draft of a radio play. Before turning to fiction full time, I spent many years as a freelance journalist, and have written hundreds of features for mainstream women’s consumer magazines such as Bella, Best, Prima, Real etc. I’ve also written nine non-fiction books on health or health-related topics.
Like most writers, I love to teach my craft, and have been teaching new writers of all ages and abilities for several years. This is my second year of teaching with OCA, and I particularly enjoy being able to offer support on a one-to-one basis, using close feedback to help writers expand and develop their skills. I also run Creative Writing courses and workshops in the community, as well as being an Associate Lecturer on the undergraduate programme at Sheffield Hallam University.
My first degree is in English, and I have an MA in Writing from Sheffield Hallam. I also hold qualifications in journalism and teaching in further and higher education. I am a member of the Society of Authors, and the National Association of Writers in Education.
Some of my short stories have won or been shortlisted for awards. I adapted one of these for radio, and it was broadcast on BBC Radio 4. My first novel, despite having nearly sold to a major publisher, is still seeking a home and is undergoing some delicate surgery before going out into the world for the second time. My second novel is still bubbling in my head.
I live in Sheffield and don’t spend anywhere near enough time enjoying the beautiful Peak District countryside which is close to where we live.
