Sarah Braddock-Clarke

I am a freelance Lecturer, Writer and Curator. Based near St. Ives in Cornwall I am also Senior Lecturer (0.4) in Historical & Contextual Studies for University College Falmouth's B.A. (Hons) Degrees in Fashion Design and Performance Sportswear Design. I lecture part-time on other UCF courses (both practical and theoretical) including Textile Design B.A. (Hons), Contemporary Crafts B.A. (Hons) and History of Modern Art & Design M.A. Degrees.

I studied for my B.A. (Hons) Degree in Textile Design at Winchester School of Art (1980 - 1983) where I was awarded a three-month scholarship to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City (1982). I later returned to USA to study for my Master of Fine Arts at the University of Michigan School of Art where I specialised in Fiber (1985 - 1987).

My main area of research is textiles and new technologies and I write for Thames & Hudson Ltd. My books (as co-author) are Techno Textiles 2 (2005) SportsTech (2002) and Techno Textiles (1998). I am in the final stages of my next book with Thames & Hudson, again as co-author, that looks at the role the digital plays in aesthetics and working practice in the fields of textiles, fashion and media.

I have also co-curated four exhibitions - Future Textiles for The HUB, UK (2005); Edge for Oksnehallen, Copenhagen (2002); Fabric of Fashion for the British Council (international, touring show 2000 - 2002) and 2010 for the Crafts Council (a UK and Holland touring show 1994 - 1996).

Currently I am External Examiner for the Design for Textile Futures M.A. Degree at Central Saint Martins, London and also for the B.A. (Hons) Textile Design Degree at Pearl Academy of Fashion, New Delhi.

Freelance work is rich and varied and has taken me to many parts of the world. My last overseas visit was to Tel Aviv Museum of Art as the international judge for a prestigious annual Israeli design prize.

Since 2002 (and my move to Cornwall) I have been involved with distance learning teaching and work for the Julia Caprara School of Textile Arts on their B.A. (Hons) Degree in Embroidered Textiles. I teach students from all over the world from UK to New Zealand.

I have been working with OCA since 2003 and am a tutor for Textiles One, Two and Three, supporting and advising with the student's own practice at all levels - I greatly enjoy the experience.
