Richard Liley

I am a practising Artist, Teacher and Art Historian based in Eastbourne, East Sussex.

I was educated at St. Edmunds College Ware, Hertfordshire College of Art & Design and Reading University where I studied Painting under Sir Terry Frost and Art History under Neil Macgregor (Currently Director of the British Museum).

My Current work explores the painterly concerns of layering, the palimpsest and the commingling of representation and abstraction in order to create imbalances and partial harmony within my paintings - playing with what seems to be real and what is obviously not. This work is intended to expose the trickery of illusion and the painter as a visual conjurer.

I have been taking part in exhibitions ever since I exhibited in the New Contemporaries at the ICA in 1982. My most recent exhibition was with the Royal Glasgow Institute in Argyll in October 2009. I was also elected Chairman of the Eastbourne Group of Contemporary Artists in 2004 and organized group exhibitions for fifty artists at the Towner Art Gallery and at various important galleries across South East England.

There are a number of online galleries where you can view my work these are as follows:

I was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 1989 for my work in developing the GCSE examinations in Art and have worked for a number of Examinations Boards. I have written a number of educational syllabuses and courses including editing the Start Drawing Course for OCA and writing parts of the Exploring Concepts course.

I am a private teacher and Director of a private tuition business specializing in teaching for GCSE, A' Level, Adult Learning and Art Therapy. I run workshops Drawing and Painting on the Sussex Downs throughout the summer and contextual workshops at galleries during the winter.
