Nina Milton

Nina has been writing fiction since her reception teacher put a paper and pencil in front of her, and she suddenly grasped that real live people were responsible for all those lovely books.

She began by being published in weekly magazines such as Woman’s Realm and Bella. She went on to win many literary competitions, including The Crossroads Competition, Kent Festival Prize and the Wells Literary Short Story Competition.

Since 1995 Nina has been publishing books for children. She has written for the 6+ readership (Intergalactic Holiday, Gazelle Books), 9+ readers (Sweet & Sour, Harper Collins) and for young people, both in the education sector and in magazines such as Just 17.

She completed her MA in Creative Writing with Bath Spa University in 2004 and since then has taught Creative Writing Techniques in Bristol, her home town, mostly at the Bristol Folk House, while continuing to write for various publications.

As a tutor with the Open College of the Arts, she believes that writing should be a joy in itself, as well as a means of wide communication, and tries to balance strong technical advice with encouragement to experiment with a personal 'voice' in her students' writing.

She supports students in the distance learning courses of Starting to Write, Storylines, Lifelines, Writing for Children as well as students of creative fiction (novels and short stories) on both level three courses: Advanced Writing and Your own Portfolio.
