Maggy Milner

In 1991 I graduated from Derby University with BA (hons) Photostudies. In 2008 I achieved a Distinction for an MA in Art, Design, Theory and Practice, also at Derby University. Since then I have worked as a practising artist, lecturer, and commercial photographer (illustration, publishing and social photography). I specialise in still life, documentary and portraiture using both traditional processes and manipulation techniques (both analogue and digital).

As a commercial photographer, I have received commissions from publishers including Chatto Windus, Heinemann, Vintage, Harper Collins, Jonathan Cape and Oxford University Press. My work was included in the Association of Illustrators IMAGES 23 Exhibition at the Royal College of Art in 1999.

As a practising artist, I have exhibited regularly. Solo shows include The Harley Gallery, Welbeck, The Special Photographer's Gallery and Coningsby Gallery, London and Lan Kwai Fong Gallery in Hong Kong. In 2007 and 2008 I exhibited at the Djanogly, Nottingham mac Birmingham and the Derby Museum and Art Gallery and Castle Gallery, Nottingham. Recently, my work has been selected for Troika Editions Contemporary Photograph. Robert Clarke wrote previews of my exhibition Blue in the Guardian in 2008, Blue exhibition and Silent Monuments in 2007: Silent Monuments.

Recently, I have self published my first book, Blue, on Blurb. I find the bookmaking discipline a very effective and creative way of presenting one's work. When time allows I plan to make several more. Blue

My teaching experience has been wide ranging. I have taught photography in higher, further and community education, lecturing regularly on BA Photography and Film and Media courses at Sheffield Hallam University and Staffordshire University. At present I am a lecturer at Nottingham Trent University (Professional Certificate in Photography) and South Nottinghamshire College, Nottingham (HND Fine Art).

I have been an OCA tutor since 2007, tutoring Photography level 1, Art of Photography and People and Places. My students come from a range of backgrounds and experience and have different aspirations. Some students' work means they live in other parts of the world. This makes the courses ideal for them.
