BA(Hons), PGCE, PhD
Curriculum Leader for Fine Art
Since graduating with a BA(Hons) Fine Art in 1998, I have worked as a professional artist and exhibited regularly throughout the UK in unusual spaces (including Agatha Christie’s house on the river Dart, a medieval Spanish Barn in Torquay, and a Georgian crescent in Bath) as well as more established art galleries in the UK, Europe and the USA. I am a member of the artist's group Studio XYZ, and the
Space Place Practice research group comprising artists and academics from different universities. In 2009 I was awarded a PhD in Fine Art from Bath School of Art, and my post-doctoral research involves inter-disciplinary approaches to art practice, including combinations of painting, drawing and installation. I have recently co-authored a book '
Painting with architecture in mind' with other artists and philosophers, and in 2010 was awarded a short research fellowship at the
Henry Moore Institute in Leeds, where I returned in May 2011 to give a paper at the 'Construction and its Shadow' conference.
In September 2011, I began to work in collaboration with fellow researcher Dr. Michele Whiting (who also teaches with the OCA). We were awarded a joint artists' residency at
Oxbow School of Art, Michigan USA (affiliated with the
School of Arts Institute Chicago) and during our stay we responded to the historic site's architecture, woodlands and lagoon. We will present some of this work during the conference 'Affective Landscapes' (
University of Derby) prior to its exhibition at the
American Museum in Britain, and then in 2013 will spend a month in Barcelona as artists-in-residence.
My teaching experience is varied and, alongside my work as Curriculum leader, course author and assessor with the OCA, I have worked with students in other Adult, Further and Higher education establishments, teaching at beginner, A level, undergraduate and post-graduate levels – preparing and leading courses, workshops, tutorials, studio critiques, conference papers, seminars and lectures - specialising in contemporary art practice and theory.
As an experimental artist/researcher with a strong background in traditional drawing and painting techniques, I take enormous pleasure in sharing my knowledge and passion for art, and acknowledge the need for a flexible and honest approach when supporting and assessing students. My personal journey as an artist and strong commitment to art research gives me the passion to motivate and encourage others to take risks and push their ideas and methods as far as they can, and I am as excited by the emergence of my students' talent as I am by my own.
