Joanna Kinnersly-Taylor

I trained at University College of the Creative Arts (Farnham) and Glasgow School of Art, establishing my first studio with the help of a Crafts Council Setting up Grant in 1989. As a printed textile artist and designer, I now work from my 'WASPS' studio in Glasgow, where my wide-ranging practice embraces architectural commissions, one-off works for galleries, and ranges of domestic linens.

In creating site-specific, often large-scale wall hangings and panels for public spaces, I have undertaken commissions for a variety of environments that have ranged from a hospital atrium to a quayside. I have also developed designs that can integrate into functioning parts of an interior environment, such as desktops and other non-textile surfaces, as well as soft furnishings that form part of an overall design scheme. In my one-off works for galleries and interiors, there is a theme of memory and the home running through much of my work. Images have their context altered through being magnified, manipulated or abstracted, and are translated through a series of layers to create new intimate 'landscapes'. Experimenting with scale and repetition, I create layers and visual rhythms that evoke a sense of recognition and seek to capture a particular moment, atmosphere or environment.

My work has been exhibited widely, both in the UK and abroad and often as a member of the '62 Group of Textile Artists'; it has also appeared in books, magazines and on television. I run intensive five day and weekend courses from my studio, and am a visiting lecturer on various textile degree courses.

My book, 'Dyeing and Screen-Printing on Textiles', a technical manual which covers all the key processes involved in producing dyed and screen-printed cloth, was published by A & C Black in 2003. It has proved highly popular for students and professionals alike and is currently being updated for a second edition (out early 2011).

I have tutored OCA students on all three Textiles courses since 2005, and offer both postal and face-to-face tuition.
