Elizabeth Smith

I have an MA in Art & Design Education and a first degree in Art & Design (textiles). I have been involved in teaching art, design and textiles for many years, from undergraduate to post graduate level. I have been active in the design and development of art programmes up to and including MA level and published papers in the International Journal of Art & Design Education.

I continue to work as a practising artist and have exhibited in the UK, USA and a number of European countries, including the Netherlands, Spain and Austria. My current work is based around the idea of personal identity and how this can be signified through drawing upon previous experiences and memories. I work with a variety of media and I particularly enjoy working with recycled materials. My working processes include hand and machine stitching and the layering of papers, fabrics and fibres to form subtle and interesting surface textures. I am a member of the Embroiderer’s Guild.

I have been an OCA tutor since 2005 and I tutor on the textiles courses at levels one, two and three. I enjoy the stimulus of working with students at all levels and helping them realise their full creative potential.
