I am considering taking some of the photography courses but am unsure about whether to take both Art of Photography and Introduction to Digital Photography or mix and match one of those with other Arts modules such as Drawing 1, or Understanding Western Art 1 instead. Can anyone comment on the potential overlap between the two first level photography modules?

Hello Reepicheep,

There is some overlap of assignments between the two level 1 photography courses. We would recommend first taking the Art of Photography course, as it teaches the principles of photographic composition and how to use your camera to maximum creative advantage. There will be two new courses available under the Photography umbrella early 2009, one dealing with digital practice and the other as a precursor to the Landscape and Social Documentary courses at Level 2 - so by the time you finish the Art of Photography, there will be a greater range of courses to choose from. I hope this helps.

Paul (OCA).

Thanks Paul. Yes that helps. Will look at the new course descriptions when they come online.

Hi Paul, this sounds great! So the precursor to the Landscape and Social Documentary courses at Level 2 will be level 1 course?

Been looking for a Photography course on line for ages and the AOP course sounds spot on. especially if I can follow it with Landscape etc... (not keen on digital courses as I've used Photoshop professionally for 12 years)

Another question, Is there a more in depth forum for students or is this it?

Many thanks!
Bruce

That's right Bruce, it is a level one course, which will be called 'People and Place' and we should start taking enrolments early in the new year.

Your question on the forums is a good one. There are indeed other forums which are only available to enrolled students. As I thought the answer to your question might be of wider interest I have put the answer here www.oca-uk.com/forum/public-general/forum-observations-and-questions

Thanks Gareth!

Just one more thing, Can I start a course at any time or is it based on term times?

Many thanks! This is really exciting me, I've been looking for a while and been put off by some of the ones out there with no real weight behind them. OCA on the other is looking great!

Cheers

You can start at any point in the year Bruce and (within reason) work at your own pace. Most people take 12-15 months to complete

Do you know if i can do a level 1, then a level 2, then a level 3?
I'm not sure yet if I would like to go to degree level and know I don't want any photoshop courses as such (I've been a graphic designer for 12 years so I'm ok with PS)

Basically I'm not sure if you have to go in order: 3 level 1'sand then 2 level 2's to be able to do a level 3 course.

hope that makes sense?

Cheers

The Level 1 "People and Place" looks to be an interesting Level 1 option especially with the Landscape level 2 to follow on. But what about a Level 2 Portraiture module, is there likely to be one? The Social Documentary Level 2 module isn't quite the same.

Hi reepicheep - I'm doing Soc Doc at the moment, and I think you could tailor it to be how you want it to be. I think a lot of the images I've taken have ended up being portraits of people (although not formal portraits in that sense). The technical aspects of the course are again about composition, lighting, etc - and you do an essay on a photographer, so you could pick one who does more portraiture.

Bruce - your question has never been answered. No, you don't need to do 3 Level 1 courses before moving to Level 2. I did TAOP and then went straight to Social Documentary, and I'm doing Digitial 2 without having done Digital 1.

You can also backwards convert courses - so if you did 3 courses at Level 2, you can convert 1 to be a Level 1.
