Jose Navarro is an OCA photography tutor and documentary photographer. His website is certainly worth a visit, but in particular his photographs of Crofters in North Uist are not to be missed. His work captures a sense of place and time, the nature of the light that far north and character of the crofting community
You can see his work here |

The collection of Crofters' photos are very moving - really capture the feel of the harsh way of life. The ones of Ena McNeill brushing her hair and the ones of her house are my favourite.
I've printed off a few to try and copy into my art sketchbook. It is so important to keep a record of these dying communites. I'm a farmer in North Cornwall, and over the last 25 years I have seen so many of the farms dissapear; the land sold to just a few big farmers and the buildings converted into holiday homes. There are only four Cornish families left in our village ! |

Hi Didi
Glad you liked them. Your comments remind me of a quote I heard somewhere but now have forgotten the source, which went something like 'whether they like it or not, photographers are inevitably historians'. Arguably the saying could be extended to other media like sketching I think |

Sometimes my vocabulary leaves me when I am greatly moved. So, just . . . Wow.

Looking at these images reminded me of the of the photos taken by the great American photographer Paul Strand in 1954 of South Uist - Tir A'Mhurain - the Outer Hebrides of Scotland by Pail Strand.
Also of interest are the Photographs of Gus Wylie - The Hebrideans taken in the 70s and 80s showing the changes that are ongoing in the Western Isles. |
