This course introduces you to the language, elements and principles of design in relation to interiors. Through a range of hands-on projects you will consider the importance of human scale, learn how to use lighting, colour, pattern and texture and acquire basic experience in drawing, model-making and creating sample boards. You will also develop a working knowledge of the history of interior design and of contemporary design. The course gives you numerous opportunities to develop your own personal style and to use your own home in design projects. Anyone with an interest in interior design is welcome to enrol. You do not need drawing skills as you will be shown ways of creating the drawings needed to support your designs.
The course aims to develop an understanding of design as it applies to interiors; help students acquire the technical knowledge and skills needed to conceive creative and satisfying designs.
You are allocated a tutor and receive their details in your course pack. You work from the course materials and send regular assignments to your tutor. These are returned to you with comment and advice. The course fee includes tutor feedback on your set assignments, but you can purchase feedback and comment on additional pieces of work if you wish.
You choose a tutor within travelling distance and you meet them at mutually agreeable times and dates. You are entitled to an agreed number of hours tuition, typically five hours. Tutors work from their own studios or other suitable teaching space. You can find out where your nearest tutor is by contacting Academic Services on 0800 731 2116.
