This course builds on Garden Design 1: The Art of Design and exposes you to more demanding challenges giving you deeper insight into the practical aspects of garden design. You will be carrying out four major projects, each one underpinned by research allowing you to use initiative and make individual choices. The first project emphasises creativity while working on a site with difficult changes of level and a demanding brief. In the final project you will be designing a garden of your own choice and showing, through working drawings and management and maintenance plans, how the design is to be achieved. We advise taking Garden Design 1 before enrolling on this course but direct entry is possible for more experienced designers.
The course aims to extend analytical and interpretive drawing skills; develop problem solving skills and skills in generating and refining designs through working drawings and plans; deepen understanding of the process of assessing sites and client requirements; explore in more detail the principles of working with hard and soft components.
You are allocated a tutor and receive their details in your course pack. You work from the course materials and send regular assignments to your tutor. These are returned to you with comment and advice. The course fee includes tutor feedback on your set assignments, but you can purchase feedback and comment on additional pieces of work if you wish.
You choose a tutor within travelling distance and you meet them at mutually agreeable times and dates. You are entitled to an agreed number of hours tuition, typically five hours. Tutors work from their own studios or other suitable teaching space. You can find out where your nearest tutor is by contacting Academic Services on 0800 731 2116.
Students complete four main projects and maintain a learning log.
