Course Overview

This MA course is at Level 4 (HE7)

The new - unique - MA Fine Art by distance learning, with the Open College of the Arts, is an ideal course for artist practitioners, art teachers and tutors, and students graduating but wishing to take their studies on further. This MA is the only distance learning Fine Art programme MA in Europe, is practice based (rather than focussed on theory) and has flexible entry requirements.

You will have a personal tutor who is both a practising artist and has extensive HE teaching experience. You can still be in employment while you are studying, based at home, and continuing your usual art practice as well. This course is extremely flexible and its structure means you can earn while you learn and at the same time advance your career prospects. People studying this MA will be better placed to gain higher level teaching posts in the field of art, or move into creative sectors of employment.

This self study course, with online collaboration with other students as well as the opportunity to attend workshops with them, consists of six modules to enrich your understanding of art and help you fulfil your artistic ambitions and develop your visual identity.

The course encompasses a broad practice based philosophy in Fine Art, allowing flexibility of practice from skills based work through to conceptual practice.

If students change their mind about participating in the course, they may ask for a refund on their first payment within one month of paying for the course.

If a student decides, after six months of study, that the MA is not for them, they will forfeit part of the fee, but if other payments have been made they are refundable.

There are a total of 180 credits in this degree, which cover essential elements including:

  • Visual enquiry and research methods This unit focuses on processes and methods relating to research to support art practice.
  • Professional Context
    This unit aims to help students professionalise their approach to art practice and introduces methods and skills for students to promote their work.
  • Exploratory Project
    This unit provides the opportunity for students to explore new artistic investigations and plan their programme of study.
  • Studio Practice:
    Independent Study This unit provides the platform for students to develop and extend an area of investigation and implement the methods and processes introduced earlier.
  • Reflective Practice This unit aims to get students developing a body of resolved work in an area of investigation identified in the unit Exploratory Project. Your tutor will expect a high level of critical engagement and sustained in-depth enquiry.
  • Final Project
    This unit focuses on the production of studio work for display at a professional level in a public exhibition, backed up by the exposition of the ideas and concepts you have developed through the course of the MA.
