CW2: Making 'Magic' Happen

Overview

This course is called Making ‘Magic’ Happen because writing for children is about bringing whole worlds into existence right in front of the child’s ‘eyes of the imagination’. A children’s writer needs to be a safe and genuine ‘wonder maker’, someone who can create a world that is marvellous, mysterious and unaccountably enchanting, yet always provide an underlying sense of security. It is recommened that students take Starting to Write before starting this course but direct entry is available to more experienced writers.

What does the course cover?

The course focuses on understanding what a story is and the art of storytelling in a way that relates to younger readers. In this intermediate level course, well-known writers and storytellers share their insights about how they go about writing in a way that really does make 'magic' happen. The course looks at some of the dangers as well as the glorious flights of fantasy available to the writers of this genre.
