This is one of our most popular courses as it lays the foundation for further study in a wide range of art and design disciplines. It is ideal for people wanting a broad introduction to the visual arts before making decisions about more specialised courses. It is also ideal for anyone needing to produce a portfolio of work to support an application for full-time study at an art college or university.

  • Drawing and painting from observation using a variety of subjects: still life; self-portrait; landscape; working from a theme
  • Colour theory: mixing and using colour
  • Studying and copying a painting
  • Working in three dimensions: relief; modelling in clay; construction sculpture
  • Textile design: printing and painting surfaces; stitching and construction
  • Graphic design: collage; lettering; poster design; making an image.

The course aims to help students decide which areas of art and design they want to concentrate on in the future; introduce drawing, painting, use of colour, tone, shape and texture; offer options in sculpture, textiles and graphic design; and to support students in creating a portfolio of work.

Postal Tuition

You are allocated a tutor and receive their details in your course pack. You work from the course materials and send regular assignments to your tutor. These are returned to you with comment and advice. The course fee includes tutor feedback on your set assignments, but you can purchase feedback and comment on additional pieces of work if you wish.

Face to Face Tuition

You choose a tutor within travelling distance and you meet them at mutually agreeable times and dates. You are entitled to an agreed number of hours tuition, typically five hours. Tutors work from their own studios or other suitable teaching space. You can find out where your nearest tutor is by contacting Academic Services on 0800 731 2116.

22 projects and five assignments. Students also maintain a learning log. This course is not accredited, but you can still go through the assessment process.
